Hi, I have a Canon digital camera which recently get infected by trojan infection and corrupted my SD card. I noticed this issue when I tried to take pictures with my Canon Camera and it displayed a message saying ‘no memory card inserted or found’. It was a frustrating situation for me. I took out the SD card and inserted back again in the camera but the problem was same. Later on, I inserted the SD card into my laptop to take the backup of pictures and video recordings stored in it. But, when I tried to open the card, it triggered a virus warning message stating ‘A threat has detected’. The DCIM folder and other folders within it was infected with this trojan infection. In this situation formatting the SD card was a solution to get rid of this virus infection but on the other hand it may result in the permanent deletion of photos stored in the card. Once I thought that my photos are gone forever and must say it was a terrible experience for me. I didn’t wanted to format the card because the pictures stored was precious to me.

Thus, I started searching for the solution to remove virus from SD card and recover pictures from it. I took the help of Internet and went through forums and blog sites for the useful guidelines to recover data from corrupt SD card. while searching I get the solution on the website, a couple of manual steps to retrieve data from corrupt SD card. The step-by-step process are as follows :

  1. In the first step, connect the SD card to a computer via USB drive using a cable.
  2. After that when you try to open the SD card, there are two possibilities :
  • The SD card gets detected by the system
  • You will get error message, saying “ E:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.”

3. To deal with the error message, you need to open the command prompt and type “chkdsk” as a command line.
4. Go to Start → click Run
5. In the ‘Run‘ box type cmd and click OK. Now type the following :

chkdsk [sd card drive letter] /r – It will Scan and tries to do the Recovery of bad sectors
chkdsk [sd card drive letter] /f – Automatically Fixes file system errors on the disk

The chkdsk command simply checks for structure corruption of a disk. Meanwhile, while using this command, it display a message that drive is not in use. To continue, press “Y”, it will start running through directories and files. After the scan is completed, it asked to save lost chains into files and thus, I choose “Yes”.
